Bert Stevens

Bert Stevens was sworn in as the Official Town Crier as part of Sidney's 100th anniversary celebrations in 1991. Sidney by the Sea is a coastal community located on Vancouver Island. He was the first official crier on the west coast of Canada and in fact the first official crier west of Calgary. He has attended world competitions in 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2001 and attended the British National competition as a guest crier, the Millennium Competition in Ghent, Belgium and the Lord Mayor of Chester's World Invitational. He is founder and chair of the Pacific Northwest Company of Town Criers.

His uniform is that of a gentleman from the 1760's. The cape was designed by the local Deep Cove Weavers and Spinners. A blend of local wool and European silk was spun and then woven to create the fabric which was then sewn to be historically correct. A wave pattern was created to simulate the waves of the ocean. The gold braining used as trim is also original, being a rare Japanese form perfected by one of the members of the Weavers and Spinners.

Highlights of Sidney by the Sea include whale watching, diving, kayaking, golfing, fishing, or simply strolling a beach. Downtown has taken on a village atmosphere with an eclectic collection of shops, restaurants and services.
